Without Reflection, We Go Blindly On Our Way

I love this time of year. It’s Christmas. Every meal is a feast. There are baked goods galore. I can walk around in my pajamas all week. I don’t shave for a few weeks. My face gathers the manly stubble of a 15 year old.

You know what else I love?

New Year’s goals.

Seriously. Nothing gets me more motivated to tackle my goals than the end of another calendar year. One of the most rewarding activities is to review and reflect on the past year and look at all that has occurred. It’s so easy to forget all that we’ve been able to accomplish and experience in the past 12 months.

So take some time today to jot down some key memories from 2015.

Go ahead, you can do it right now. I’ll wait…

OK!

So after a quick scan of this 2015 list, what do you notice?

  1. Were there any significant life changes or events?
  2. Have you achieved something noteworthy or remarkable?
  3. What was the most meaningful or important moment for you?

I love this quote from one of my favorite TV characters:

“You know, if you take everything I’ve done in my entire life and condense it down into one day, it looks decent.” ~ George Costanza

Adjust your mindset to focus on this year’s past wins and important life moments. Yes, of course there are things you want to improve upon and refine this next year – but if your focal point is on things you haven’t done or ways you’ve failed – then you’re letting the air out of your sails before you’ve even started!

“Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.” ~ Margaret J. Wheatley
